Final point: Clement Greenberg was excoriated by the left of his day, if I'm remembering rightly, because he supported the war in Vietnam and excoriated people, especially Rosenberg, who opposed it. I can't remember, but I believe his reasoning was that the Communism of China and the USSR was not what Marx had intended Communism to be, that it was another form of impiairlesm. I'm not certain of this because I learned it through a professor of art criticism in conversation many years ago, and never pursued it. He was a very careful researcher and scholar, though, so I expect he was right. Alias Clio
